Missing In Action
Appreciation of the Mystery
“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
What a prayer! I’ve been chewing on it for a long while. “Rooted & grounded in love”. When I speak on the subject I see the yawns. Eyes glaze over, as though this is fluff, the same old same old. Yet Paul refers to it as knowing the incomprehensible and being “filled with all the fullness of God.” Might we be missing something important?
Jesus said that the most important command in all of history & scripture is that we must love God with all that we are and all that we have. He even gave us God’s 2nd priority; that we would love one another AS Christ loved us.
God’s two premier priorities for humanity, yet unfullfilled. Nobody gets it completely correct.
Misunderstood, misappropriated, and missing in action.
So, do we surrender to failure, or appeal to Him for assistance? “Dear God, I want to DO this. I want to LOVE you, and others, fully. Please, remake me. Enable that kind of life in ME.”
What a prayer. It’s a prayer that requires courage. The kind if courage that leads One to a cross, to self sacrifice, to an others-centered existence. What if He’s waiting, eagerly, for us to ask Him for THAT….
